Day 19: The True Christian Life

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

                                                                                                                  ---Psalm 27:4

Contrary to what many Christians believe, doing good works is not the essence of Christianity.

The true Christian life is first and foremost about knowing, loving, and appreciating Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 7, Jesus talks about a group of people who will come to Him and say, "Lord, we did many powerful works in your name." Jesus will say to them "Depart from me. I never knew you" or "You never had a close relationship with me."

The Bible tells us we should do good. However, we should only do those tasks God has specifically directed us to do. In other words, our good works should flow out from our communion with God.

Heavenly Father, help me to set time aside to fellowship with You each day. Help me to hear Your voice and do only those things You are telling me to do. I lay out my thoughts, plans and activities (name them here). Speak to me about each one. Help me to cut back if I need to, so that my time with You each day can be constant and uninterrupted. In Jesus' name. Amen.
